Cornerstone for Life, a Christian-oriented pregnancy center organized by local volunteers, will open soon in Storm Lake.

Sue Thayer, Storm Lake, said that discussion on such a project has been going on for a few years, originally seen as a pro-life alternative to Planned Parenthood, the agency she once directed in the city.

“When Planned Parenthood closed, there were no less pregnant women who needed help. Our design is to help anyone who needs us to learn about life, living a better life and dealing with pregnancy and preparing to have a child,” she said.

The organization has obtained a site at 205 Flindt Drive, in the same complex as The Bridge. Donations from individuals and churches have already covered rent for the first six months and provided for most of the necessary furnishings.

Cornerstones of Life is seeking non-proft status and vision and mission statements are being prepared in anticipation of an opening soon. A governing board is being formed to operate the center, which includes leaders from Storm Lake, Fort Dodge and Algona – it is hoped that Spencer will soon be joining, When each of the four communities have similar centers, they will form a rectangular “cornerstone” on the map to serve most of northwest Iowa.
