The Monday letter “Abortion was less of issue then than now” from Mark Brown was misleading, at best. He stated, “Jesus, according to the canonical Gospels, had nothing to say about it.” Whereas this is true for the four existing Gospels, it is well known and documented that many early writings have been destroyed or otherwise lost.
We know nothing about what Jesus might have said in those lost writings.
Just because nothing is said about a specific topic in the four Gospels in the Bible should not be construed to mean that Jesus never took a public position on that topic.
Brown is correct when he mentioned that abortion was practiced in ancient Rome and Greece. However, Brown’s statement that abortion was “accepted” in those cultures also is misleading.
